Nuclear fusion: What the reactor “Demo” is supposed to do – knowledge

Interview by Christian J. Meier

In the current gas crisis, many are wondering what an energy supply should look like without this raw material. Hardly anyone thinks of nuclear fusion, although this energy source has many advantages. A fusion power plant is to fuse hydrogen atomic nuclei into helium based on the model of the sun, without producing greenhouse gases. The Iter test fusion reactor is currently being built in southern France, but it will not yet supply electricity. This is only to be achieved by a follow-up project called “Demo”, the design phase of which has now begun: the planners select the most suitable components and test how they work together. The physicist Hartmut Zohm from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching is one of the planners of Demo. It is still unclear exactly where the reactor will be located, but one thing is certain: somewhere in Europe.
