Results from basic research are rarely presented personally by the US Secretary of Energy. But on Tuesday, Jennifer Granholm proudly stepped out in front of the press to celebrate a success at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California, and “a breakthrough that will go down in history” was among the humbler phrases. According to their own statements, the researchers succeeded in gaining more energy in a fusion experiment than was put in to trigger the reaction.
