On Thursday, the suspect was temporarily arrested after another break-in near the crime scene. He has been in custody since today, the statement says. He had not previously been charged with any criminal offenses and was not known to the police. The motive for the crime is currently being investigated. The authorities do not want to provide any further information at this time, citing the suspect’s young age.
“Der Spiegel” (online) had previously reported on the arrest and wrote about a 17-year-old young convert. The accused was apparently known to the security authorities as an Islamist. A spokesman for the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of the Interior referred to the message from the police and public prosecutor’s office and did not want to provide any further information.
