Düsseldorf’s old town is a popular party mile. After repeated acts of violence, a gun ban for the “longest bar in the world” is now being discussed.

After the second bloody act within a few days, the votes for a gun ban in Düsseldorf’s old town are increasing. He advocates such a ban, said Düsseldorf’s police chief Norbert Wesseler on Monday.

Knives and other weapons had no place in the old town. “From my point of view there is no justifiable situation in which I need a knife as a peacefully partying old town visitor,” said the police chief.

Düsseldorf’s Lord Mayor Stephan Keller (CDU) brought such a ban up for discussion at the weekend. The old town should be declared a gun ban zone, he demanded.

The country would have to enact a regulation and enforce it by the police. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) was not averse: “Whoever wants to celebrate does not need a knife,” he told the “Rheinische Post”.

Last Saturday, a youth from the Ruhr area was stabbed in the old town and seriously injured. The young person probably only survived because two doctors happened to come by and immediately provided him with professional first aid.

The crime scene in the old town is under video surveillance and the evaluation is ongoing. Only a week ago there was a fatal argument in the old town, which is nicknamed the “longest bar in the world” because of its large number of pubs, in which a 19-year-old died.

The police had only expanded video surveillance in the old town a few weeks ago. The city had increased the lighting on the nearby banks of the Rhine because there had also been increased crimes and tumults.
