State election in North Rhine-Westphalia:CDU claims to form a government, SPD is combative, Greens cheer
- North Rhine-Westphalia has voted. According to extrapolations, the CDU with incumbent Wüst (about 35 percent) is well ahead of the SPD with challenger Kuchaty (about 28 percent).
- The Greens, with top candidate Mona Neubaur, have improved significantly to around 18 percent.
- The FDP and AfD, each with a good five percent, have to tremble about entering the Düsseldorf state parliament.
- It is not yet clear who will ultimately be elected prime minister and which parties will be involved in the government.
