The CDU triumphed in the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia ahead of the SPD – which recorded its worst result in the post-war period. Follow the latest developments and projections in the star-Live blog.

Cheering in the CDU of Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst in North Rhine-Westphalia: The Christian Democrats have clearly won the state elections. Her previous coalition partner FDP, on the other hand, suffered heavy losses, and according to the projections on Sunday evening, she even had to tremble about returning to the state parliament. The SPD with top candidate Thomas Kutschaty ended up in second place with a historically poor result. The Greens achieved a record result and are likely to become the decisive factor in forming a government.

The black-yellow coalition that has been in power for five years no longer has a majority. Among other things, a black-green alliance would now be conceivable. Wüst explained: “The people have clearly made us the strongest force. That is the task of forming and leading a future government.”

However, Kutschaty could also try to forge a traffic light alliance with the Greens and FDP based on the model in the federal government, as long as the FDP moves back into the state parliament. Under certain circumstances, it could also just be enough for red-green. Kuchaty said in the evening: “We will not close our minds to talks.”

At the upcoming federal party conference, the course would have to be set anew. At the end of June, the top of the Left Party wants to be completely reorganized. Wissler states that the goal is to regain trust and “to be (again) more with clear messages than with quarrels in the press”. She is convinced that a left-wing voice is needed in German politics.

He is satisfied with his party’s performance: Union faction leader Jens Spahn speaks of a “great result” on ARD. Spahn emphasizes that the clear winners in North Rhine-Westphalia are the Christian Democrats and the Greens. The SPD, on the other hand, is “the big loser in the election” and therefore has no right to form a government. Anyone who still has government claims after such a “historically poor result” “cannot be helped,” said Spahn.

The deputy CDU chairman Karin Prien also sees a clear government mandate after the first forecast. “The CDU is clearly the strongest force, which clearly goes hand in hand with a government mandate for the CDU”she says on ZDF.
