Nine months ago, the July flood destroyed parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. 181 people lost their lives. Chancellor Scholz now got an idea of ​​​​reconstruction.

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser visited areas in North Rhine-Westphalia that were affected by the flood disaster. Both were guests in the city of Bad Münstereifel together with Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst. Scholz got an idea of ​​the status of the reconstruction in the region that was particularly affected by the July flood of last year.

“We were here together to find out from people how they feel and how they have felt over the past few months,” said Wüst. “It demands a lot of respect with what community effort is being rebuilt here.” Public statements from Scholz were not planned.

Scholz and Faeser then traveled on to the Ahr Valley in Rhineland-Palatinate to find out about the status of the reconstruction. They were accompanied by Malu Dreyer (SPD) and Cornelia Weigand, the non-party district administrator for the Ahrweiler district. During a tour of Ahrbrück Scholz, Scholz also had discussions with those affected. The place in the community of Altenahr was hit particularly hard by the flood.

Many dead in NRW and Rhineland-Palatinate

Extreme heavy rain in July triggered devastating floods in both federal states. In North Rhine-Westphalia there were 48 dead, in Rhineland-Palatinate 133 people died.
