Niclas Füllkrug’s farewell is perfect: the national player leaves Bremen and joins Borussia Dortmund.

The change of national soccer player Niclas Füllkrug from Werder Bremen to Borussia Dortmund is perfect. Both clubs confirmed this on Thursday evening. The top scorer of the past Bundesliga season has received a contract with the runners-up until 2026. Previously, several media had unanimously reported on the upcoming transfer. “I was really happy about the offer, because joining this club is exactly what I wanted,” said Füllkrug.

At BVB I have the chance to develop as a player and gain new experiences. I’m really excited about the tasks ahead and I want to be as successful as possible with this team.

For Werder’s head of professional football, Clemens Fritz, it was clear that the club and Füllkrug had to get together if there was a good offer. “That was the case now, so in the end we made the decision to sell Niclas.” That was apparently the case with the offer from Dortmund.

We would like to thank Fulness for the outstanding performances over the past few years and wish him all the best in Dortmund.

Dortmund’s sports director Sebastian Kehl described the filling pitcher as an “important pillar in the national team’s center of attack”. Füllkrug is a “playing attacker, very strong in the air, physically present, he convinces in one-on-one duels and is uncomfortable for his opponent in a duel,” says Kehl: “With all these skills, he embodies the profile we were looking for .”

In Dortmund, Füllkrug is said to collect six million euros a year. The clubs agreed not to disclose the transfer fee for the 30-year-old, according to media reports it should be 15 million euros – well below the 20 million euros originally called by Werder. Füllkrug’s contract with Werder ran until 2025.

Severe blow for Werder

For Bremen, the loss of the crowd’s favorite is a heavy blow. “That’s the reality we live in,” said coach Ole Werner about the changes in his squad shortly before the end of the transfer: “You have to manage these situations. I feel like this job.”

Füllkrug scored 49 goals in 123 competitive games for Werder and put on 16 more. At BVB, the native of Hanover will probably form the second lead behind Sebastien Haller – and probably displace his national team colleague Youssoufa Moukoko. Füllkrug could already make his debut for Borussia in the important Bundesliga game against newly promoted 1. FC Heidenheim on Friday (8.30 p.m.).
