In the age of stand-up specials, memes and HBO series, making you gasp with laughter is certainly not part of a novel’s job. But that’s how it was in the first chapter of Percival Everett’s “The Trees”. The viciousness with which he describes the very white Bryant family as a bunch of village idiots in a town called Money on the back of Mississippi is among the most ingenious meanness in American literary history.
