Novak Djokovic faces uncertain months – it is not yet clear which tournaments the unvaccinated tennis star can compete in. However, he does not want to be vaccinated. The airline Ryanair took this as an opportunity for a cheeky saying.

The seemingly endless theater about Novak Djokovic and his ultimately rejected entry to Australia for the Australian Open has just subsided when the next discussion is already looming. The French Open will start in Paris on May 22 – and there, too, the vaccination status of the tennis star could again ensure that he cannot even compete in the Grand Slam tournament. It could also happen in other tournaments that the unvaccinated Serb is not allowed to participate.

Novak Djokovic: “I’m willing to pay the price”

Djokovic has already commented on this in a BBC interview. The 34-year-old made it clear that he would rather not take part in other important tennis tournaments than get vaccinated: “Yes, that’s the price I’m willing to pay.” Nevertheless, he is not opposed to vaccination and does not want to be associated with this movement. These contradictory statements caused a lot of incomprehension – also from the airline Ryanair, who then made fun of Djokovic with a tweet: “We are not an airline, but we fly with planes.”

Ryanair jokes at tennis star’s expense

The tweet has now been retweeted well over 20,000 times and more than 180,000 users have liked it. However, the reactions of the users are very different: while some consider the joke to be successful and see it as a clear statement from the company, others are annoyed that Ryanair is positioning itself in this debate and ask whether the airline would like to do without unvaccinated passengers would like.

Novak Djokovic was unable to start at the Australian Open in Melbourne in January because he would have had to prove a vaccination against Covid-19 to enter Australia. However, the world number one apparently assumed that he had been exempted from the vaccination requirement by an exemption from the state of Victoria. After a long back and forth and a few court hearings, Djokovic was denied entry.

Novak Djokovic does not rule out vaccination

Although he was vaccinated as a child, Djokovic explained in an interview with the BBC, he now wants to decide for himself what is put into his body. Nevertheless, he did not categorically rule out getting vaccinated in the future, “because we all have to try together to find the best possible solution to end Covid”.

"He's an asshole": Moderators insult Djokovic in leaked video

In the coming week, the Serb will be back on the tennis court: he will compete in the ATP tournament in Dubai – that is also possible there without vaccination. “I miss tennis after everything that’s happened,” Djokovic said. “I’m looking forward to playing again on Monday.”
