Not just standstill and regression: Diversity in the media 2023 – Media

Flight, migration, integration… These topics will once again be of intense concern to the media in 2023. And the focus was mostly on what was actually or supposedly not going well in Germany as a country of immigration: New Year’s Eve riots, so-called “clan crime”, municipalities overwhelmed by the reception of refugees. There is also a heated debate on migration, which is also a reaction to the rising poll numbers of the AfD, which is partly right-wing extremist.

Despite these developments, progress can also be observed in media reporting in 2023. Journalists and experts with immigration backgrounds could be seen, read and heard on all of the controversial topics mentioned above – often in prominent places. A sign that many editorial teams have recognized how important diverse perspectives are for appropriate reporting. There is also a broad consensus in German journalism to condemn racist and discriminatory labels for minorities. And almost all German media discuss the necessity of immigration, diversity and cosmopolitanism for the country’s economic development.

In the current episode, the quoted hosts Nadia Zaboura and Nils Minkmar take a look at what is going better around the media and immigration society than in previous times – and what still leaves something to be desired. The guest is Elena Kountidou, managing director of the New German Media Makers. The association has been campaigning for more diversity in the German media landscape for 15 years.
