Hakim Ziyech has been banned from the Moroccan national team for disciplinary reasons. According to Vahid Halilhodzic, it should stay that way.
According to national coach Vahid Halilhodzic, Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech has no chance of returning to the Moroccan national team. The reason is the behavior and poor training morale of the attacker. This “does not fit” with his selection, according to the coach.
“The players I chose are the best in the country,” said Halilhodzic at a press conference after the Africa Cup of Nations and justified Ziyech’s non-nomination as follows: “I don’t choose a player who throws the group off balance . Not even if his name is Lionel Messi. He doesn’t want to train, he doesn’t want to play”.
Halilhodzic criticizes Chelsea star Ziyech
Halilhodzic recalled Ziyech’s performance at the last African Cup: “After the Africa Cup of Nations three years ago, he was the most heavily criticized. He was booed. You can’t forget that.”
The last time Ziyech played for Morocco was in a friendly against Burkina Faso last July – and it looks like he won’t be playing for his home country any time soon.
After that test, Halilhodzic had ranted: “His behavior in the last two games, especially the last one, was not that of a national player who, as a leader in the team, has to be a positive role model.”
Without Ziyech, Morocco were eliminated in the quarter-finals of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-1 defeat by Egypt.
