‘Not again!’ – Spider-Man 2 fans’ PS5 keeps crashing, making the game impossible for them to play

Be careful! Spider-Man 2 doesn’t seem to run perfectly on every PS5.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the biggest exclusive title for the PS5 this year and, as is typical for Sony, can once again shine with breathtaking graphics. In particular, the completely dynamic real-time reflections are an absolute feast for the eyes. But some players don’t even see them and somehow it seems familiar to us.

Marvel fans have been able to immerse themselves in the brand new Spider-Man adventure since October 20th, but there seems to be a little sand in the web-slinging action adventure.

Several users reported on Twitter that their console hung up or switched off automatically:

The impression that there are problems with the game is gaining ground on Reddit, and here too, numerous players are reporting that their console suddenly stopped working.

Sometimes even in the main menu:

And one of our authors also got it. So far he has been able to race through New York with the two Spideys for almost 8 hours, but as the game progresses the crashes increase in frequency.

For three other people from the editorial team, however, the title is running squeaky clean so far, so not every PS5 is likely to be affected.

Is there a solution?

The descriptions of the people with the crash problems do not yet provide a clear picture, but there are several assumptions to be made:

  • Some PS5 consoles cannot display ray tracing without errors
  • damaged savegames
  • Bugs in the game
  • Conflicts with HDR, 120 Hertz and/or VRR output
  • Overheating due to dirty ventilation or cramped positioning

Because of the abundance of potential sources of error, it is difficult to give clear tips that will help you fix the error. For example, it helped our author to deactivate 120 Hertz in the game and there was an improvement even with HDR switched off.

At the system level you can choose 120 Hertz, VRR and HDR Screen and video > Video output exhibit.

Otherwise, buyers on Reddit reported that their console was less annoying when placed horizontally and cleaning it could also help. Mind you, deep in the PS5 on the power supply, as a lot of dirt can collect there and put the component out of action.

If you lift the fan out of the PS5, you can look into the device and clean the radiator grille of the power supply with a long brush.

However, several community members also note that Spider-Man 2’s predecessors suffered from crashes in ray tracing mode when it was released. Some time later they were fixed with patches.

In the second part, patience could once again be a virtue. Nevertheless, check whether you have downloaded the current day one update (version 1.001.002), maybe there is a problem!

The update was available to us for testing, you can see our conclusion here:

On the other hand, the error descriptions are reminiscent of reports regarding Final Fantasy 16 and God of War Ragnarök – both games caused heat problems and crashes.

However, if your PS5 is so unstable when playing several games at the same time, you should contact Sony as soon as possible and claim your warranty. It could well be a hardware defect!

You have a few more options!

Since some players were able to start the game with performance mode, you can temporarily set this as the default via the settings menu on your PS5.

To do this, go to the settings:

  • Saved data and game/app settings
  • Game Presets
  • Performance mode or resolution mode

If nothing else helps, you can try reinstalling Spider-Man 2 or deleting the game save file and re-creating it.

You can do the same Clear the cache of your PS5 and rebuild the database or postpone the installation. Optionally on the internal data carrier or an NVMe storage expansion.

In our opinion, you have the best chance of success by changing the TV and graphics settings. If these are not a problem for you, you will find our recommendations here:

Apart from that, we encountered few problems

During our testing phase we encountered a comparatively small number of bugs. Every now and then a character would glide through a car or a tuft of grass would float in the air.

No clipping error - the firefighter constantly shifts his position in the cab.

So Insomniac Games still has to make a few improvements so that Spider-Man 2 flickers across your screens completely error-free. Above all, there really shouldn’t be any crashes, even if they are comparatively few and far between.
