Northern Ireland – David Trimble died – Politics

Northern Ireland Nobel Peace Prize winner David Trimble is dead. The co-architect of the Good Friday Agreement and Northern Ireland’s first head of government died on Monday at the age of 77 after a short illness, the BBC quoted as saying from a family statement. The former leader of the UUP, a Protestant unionist party that advocates union with Great Britain, pushed for a compromise with the Catholic Republican side in the face of internal resistance. This gave rise to the Good Friday Agreement, which ended decades of civil war in the British provinces in 1998. For this, Trimble and his Catholic colleague John Hume received the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year. Irish ex-Prime Minister Bertie Ahern paid tribute to Trimble. Ahern said he led the way in difficult times.
