Shocking moments on the “Stena Scandica”: A fire broke out on the Swedish car ferry with 300 passengers – but according to the authorities it has now been extinguished. No one was injured and there was no evacuation.

A fire broke out on the car ferry “Stena Scandica” off the Swedish coast with around 300 people on board. According to the shipping authority, the source was a refrigerated container on the car deck. The fire is now under control, said a spokesman for the sea rescue center of the TT news agency. There are no reports of injuries.

A spokesman for the Maritime Authority said there was smoke but no open flames. The fire was only very “limited”, said shipping company spokesman Stefan Elfström. The ferry did not have to be evacuated. The Swedish Maritime Authority sent three helicopters and seven ships.

At the time of the fire, the “Stena Scandica” was off the island of Gotska Sandön, north of Gotland. She was on her way from Nynäshamn south of Stockholm to Ventspils in Latvia. “Now the plan is to tow the vehicle to Nynäshamn, but I have no information on when it can start,” said the spokeswoman for the sea rescue center.
