VIDEO SHOWS: STORY: North Korea has unveiled a possible new solid-fueled ICBM during a night military parade. As part of the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the North Korean army, ruler Kim Jong Un oversaw the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons units, state news agency KCNA reported on Thursday. Kim described the parade as a demonstration of the country’s “significant” nuclear attack capability. Contrary to United Nations sanctions, North Korea has pushed ahead with the development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles in recent years. Most of the country’s largest ballistic missiles run on liquid fuel, so they must be refueled at the launch site, a time-consuming process. Developing a long-range solid-propellant missile has long been considered an important goal for North Korea, since equivalent nuclear missiles would be harder to detect and destroy in a conflict. It remained unclear whether the development of the putative new missile has already reached the testing phase. North Korea has occasionally displayed dummies at the parades.

On the occasion of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the North Korean army, a new ballistic ICBM was apparently presented. Despite all the sanctions, the regime in Pyongyang has pushed ahead with the development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles in recent years.

Amid rising tensions with the US and South Korea, North Korea has again shown strength and possibly displayed newly developed weapons systems in a night military parade. With reference to satellite images, experts assumed that North Korea presented more ICBMs than ever before at its troop shows and obviously also new types of missiles on the 75th anniversary of the founding of its armed forces on Wednesday. The ICBMs on display demonstrated “enormous nuclear power,” the state media reported on Thursday. The largely isolated country is subject to international sanctions for its nuclear weapons program. Pictures showed leader Kim Jong Un watching the parade from a grandstand, with soldiers marching and armored and missile vehicles driving past on Pyongyang’s floodlit Kim Il Sung Square. The spectacle started with fireworks and cannon shots. According to the North Korean media, all participants greeted Kim Jong Un with “stormy cheers”.

North Korea: Threats apply to the USA

Kim was accompanied by his wife Ri Sol Ju and his teenage daughter Ju Ae. Kim recently took her daughter to events in a military setting. In South Korea, this is interpreted as a possible message from the autocratic ruler to its own citizens that nuclear weapons are intended to protect future generations in the country. Footage from the parade indicated 10 to 12 North Korean Hwasong-17 ICBMs, North Korea expert Ankit Panda wrote on Twitter. “Combined, that’s more ICBM launchers than have ever been seen at a North Korean parade.” Dubbed Hwasongpho-17 by North Korea, the missile is the largest ICBM in its own arsenal. Intercontinental ballistic missiles, which have a range of at least 5,500 kilometers, are considered the most important means of delivering nuclear weapons. North Korea’s development of strategic missiles is particularly aimed at the United States, which Pyongyang accuses of hostile policies.

Solid fuel rockets ready for use particularly quickly

According to Panda and other experts, it appears on the first photos that a new ICBM system with solid fuel propulsion was probably presented as well. Solid fuel rockets are ready for use particularly quickly. According to the North Korean reports, cruise missiles were shown in addition to rockets of different ranges at the troop review. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated significantly over the past year. According to a UN expert report, Pyongyang tested at least 73 ballistic test missiles in violation of Security Council resolutions – 42 of them in the last four months of the year. Ballistic missiles are usually surface-to-surface missiles that, depending on the design, can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. The US and South Korea have resumed full-scale joint military exercises as a deterrent to North Korea.
