Norman Jewison is dead. The award-winning filmmaker died “peacefully” at his home on Saturday, his spokesman said in a statement on Monday. The Canadian-born man was 97 years old.
Jewison brought numerous hit films to the screen during his long career. He was nominated for an Oscar seven times as a director and producer. His films have been nominated a total of 46 times and received twelve Academy Awards. In 1999, Jewison received the Irving G. Thalberg Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Academy Awards.

For the crime thriller “In the Heat of the Night” (1967), Jewison brought Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger in front of the camera. After musicals like “Anatevka” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”, he had success in 1987 with the romantic comedy “Moonstruck”, which won Cher the Oscar for best actress.
