Germany’s best ski jumper can still celebrate in Willingen after a strong comeback. The rainy weather in particular didn’t make it easy for the jumpers.
Ski jumper Katharina Schmid has the boost from local fans at the home World Cup Willingen was able to take advantage and jumped onto the podium.
In Austria’s Jacqueline Seifriedsberger’s victory, the 27-year-old came third on the Mühlenkopfschanze with jumps of 119.5 and 130 meters. Schmid, who was able to celebrate her victory in Upland last year with the surname Althaus, improved by six places in the second round. The Japanese Sara Takanashi came second.
“It’s really cool in front of such a backdrop. I didn’t think I would be able to catch up like that, but it feels really cool,” said Schmid on ARD. With third place, she not only celebrated her second podium finish of the winter, but also her 50th podium finish in the World Cup. Selina Freitag (14th), Luisa Görlich (15th) and Juliane Seyfarth (18th) fell behind after the second jump.
The constant rain affected the approach lane, especially in the first round. Almost all of the last starters had problems with their approach speed in wet conditions. The Slovenian overall World Cup leader Nika Prevc was only in 21st place after her first jump and ended up 15th. On Sunday, the women have another jump on the large hill on the program.
