The north is startled. The sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines happened just off the coasts of Sweden and the Danish island of Bornholm. Sweden put its nuclear power plants in a state of “intensified attention” on Wednesday, the Swedish news service Säpo said the threat to Sweden had “broadened and deepened”. Denmark suddenly sees a security problem for its huge energy islands planned in the North Sea. Both countries have convened crisis teams and are investigating sabotage. And all eyes are now on Norway – now Europe’s largest gas supplier and with its more than 9,000 kilometers of pipelines as “Europe’s lifeline in a cold winter” an “obvious target”, according to the Danish newspaper Berlingske writes.
