The history of the German concentration camps has now been well researched. But who knows how it started? Where was the first camp? Few could say the answer: Shark Island, Namibia. But this is not about gruesome detailed knowledge, but rather a fundamental question of historical science. It is currently being intensively discussed: Did colonial violence lead directly to the Shoah, or do we have to differentiate?
