Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi sentenced to one year in prison for propaganda against the state

Laureate of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize and already imprisoned in Iran, Narges Mohammadi was sentenced to one year in prison for “propaganda against the State”, her lawyer announced on Tuesday on X, referring to the verdict rendered by the 29th chamber of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. She refused to attend the hearing of her trial on June 8 after unsuccessfully requesting that it be open to the public.

Me Mostafa Nili specified that his client had been tried for “her comments on Dina Ghalibaf and on the boycott of the legislative elections” held in March in Iran. Dina Ghalibaf is an Iranian journalist and student who accused the police of sexual assault.

A fight started for 25 years

Aged 52 and incarcerated since November 2021, Narges Mohammadi campaigns for women’s rights. She has already been convicted and imprisoned several times over the past 25 years for her commitment against compulsory veiling for women and against the death penalty. In March, Narges Mohammadi broadcast an audio message from prison, in which she denounced a “large-scale war against women” in the Islamic Republic.

In this message, Narges Mohammadi cited the case of Dina Ghalibaf, who, according to NGOs, was arrested in mid-April after accusing the police on social networks of having sexually assaulted her during a previous arrest in the metro . Despite her release, the journalist was prosecuted by the Iranian Judicial Authority for “false declaration”.
