Serious car accident on the A1 – but because the drivers did not form a proper emergency lane, the ambulance did not come to the accident site. The emergency doctor quickly borrowed a bicycle.

It is always a nuisance for emergency doctors and paramedics: car drivers fail to form a proper emergency lane in the event of accidents on the motorway, so that the scene of the accident is difficult to reach. In an emergency, this can even cost lives.

Even with a truck collision on the A1 at the Wuppertal-Nord junction, the way was blocked by cars. According to the Düsseldorf police, a Polish car transporter with a trailer hit a Ukrainian truck that was standing at the end of the traffic jam. The driver of the car transporter suffered “serious injuries”. The much-needed medical help was due to the lack Rescue route but not easily possible. So the emergency doctor had to resort to an unusual measure.

No emergency lane on A1 – emergency doctor borrows a bike

He first walked part of the way, then borrowed a bicycle and cycled about a kilometer to the scene of the accident to help the seriously injured man. The man had been locked in his severely deformed driver’s cab. According to the police, danger to life could not be ruled out. The fire brigade freed him from the housing, and a rescue helicopter was also in action.

“We couldn’t even get through the rescue lane to the operation,” said head of operations Simon Hartmut from the Wuppertal fire brigade to WDR. “It’s the first time for me that I’ve heard that an ambulance is running or riding a bicycle to the scene of an accident. That certainly doesn’t happen too often,” explained another firefighter.

Another truck from Belgium had driven into the van. The driver of the van from Poland was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the two truck drivers were unharmed.
