No more airy: VW no longer builds convertibles | Life & Knowledge

The end after over 75 years…

The VW Beetle convertible started in 1949, and the era of the open-top Wolfsburg will soon end: VW wants to build its last convertible shortly!

VW development boss Kai Grünitz announced this at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas Automotive News reports.

So far that is Convertible version of the T-Roc SUV, the last remaining Wolfsburg model with an open-air option. The fresh air guarantee is currently available from around 35,900 euros. The four-seater is available in two equipment variants, two petrol engines (100 hp and 150 hp) are available.

After the market launch of the new T-Roc generation in 2025, the open model variant will also be discontinued there.

And Volkswagen is right in line with the trend: sales of convertibles are falling worldwide, and fewer and fewer manufacturers are offering such cars.

While ex-VW boss Herbert Diess is still talking about an open one Electric VW had dreamed, a different wind is now blowing in Wolfsburg: There are currently no plans for a new convertible, a VW spokesman told BILD.

The good news: It’s not quite the end yet at the beginning of 2025. The (old) T-Roc convertible will initially continue to be produced in parallel with the new generation and will only be phased out later, according to Wolfsburg.
