What they were thinking is totally unclear. In Gelsenkirchen, several men disabled an ambulance that was on its way with blue lights and a siren. There was a patient in the car who urgently needed to be taken to the hospital.

There were scenes that can hardly be explained or justified: in Gelsenkirchen’s old town, a group of men blocked an ambulance on the weekend and stopped it on the way to the hospital. There was already a patient in the ambulance who needed urgent treatment with a painful fracture.

According to the police, around ten men obstructed the ambulance, which was on its way with blue lights and a siren. In the large group of men, a 22-year-old was particularly bold and provocatively stood in front of the hood of the ambulance.

According to the police, the group of men only gave up when police officers came to the scene and cleared the way for the ambulance. Pure luck for the patient and the crew of the ambulance: The police officers were only by chance in the vicinity because of another operation.

“No fun”: Police are outraged by the blockade of the ambulance

It was initially unclear why the men blocked the ambulance. In any case, the blockade will have consequences for the 22-year-old involved: A report was filed against him for coercion in road traffic. The police emphasized that obstructing emergency vehicles is no fun and, in the worst case, could endanger the lives of others. Police spokesman Thomas Nowaczyk expressed himself drastically: “Normally we are required to write press releases objectively and neutrally,” says Nowaczyk. “That’s difficult for us in this situation.”

The patient in the car was then taken to the hospital. It was a young man with a painful broken leg that needed treatment as soon as possible, a police spokesman said on Monday.
