No final for OM after their draw against Feyenoord (0-0)

Marseille never found the key. Beaten 3-2 in the first leg by Feyenoord Rotterdam, the Marseille club was unable to crack its opponent in the return match played at the Stade Vélodrome on Thursday evening, in the semi-final second leg (0-0). OM, who lost Dimitri Payet to injury shortly after the half hour mark, will have to wait to play the sixth European final in its history. This first Europa League Conference final will therefore oppose the Dutch team at AS Romaon May 25, at the Air Albania Stadium in Tirana.

We expected several scenarios, but maybe not this one. Thursday evening, at the Vélodrome, a stadium in madness was to push a boosted team to seek a European final. The supporters did their job, the players had more difficulty. Not that they did it with ill will – it is necessary to underline the great Dutch defensive rigor, symbolized by the solid Trauner – Senesi hinge. But the Phocaeans, who recorded 60% possession against a team that waited until the last moments to try to sting, lacked inspiration, precision. A bit of everything.

Payet still unlucky, Milik too tender

Everything that Dimitri Payet can bring, for example. But the Olympian technical leader came out injured half an hour into the game, as in the Europa League final against Atlético Madrid in 2018, on a muscle glitch that could compromise his end of the season. A few minutes earlier, he had created the first big opportunity for Marseille, with a shot from the left a few centimeters wide (21st).

The problem is that there were very, very few others. Launched in place of the Marseille boss, Arkadiusz Milik lacked bite on his heads, a few seconds after his entry (34th) and just before the break (45th + 2). Then Valentin Rongier, successfully placed in the center after the entry of Pol Lirola at the break, made his way into the area but struck in the arms of Ofir Marciano (55th).

Chills, there was no

This same Lirola created the last opportunity for his own by dragging in the area on a corner. But as very often, a Dutch leg dragged to counter his attempt which started well (77th). It was the men of Arne Slot, harmless so far, who even created the best situations at the end of the game (67th, 91st).

On arrival, Marseille will be able to harbor serious regrets. But not the expected ones. OM will not brood over a failed situation, a lack of success, a disputed arbitration decision, but their total inability to secure a European semi-final in their stadium, against a very serious but affordable opponent. Chills, there was not. Yet, everything came together for.
