no feat for Toulouse, swept by Liverpool at Anfield

The dream of Toulouse, in a Europa League evening that they had been waiting for for a long time, lasted half an hour. Téfécé scored a goal at Anfield, thanks to Thijs Dallinga, but Liverpool, without certain managers, held their ground and won 5-1.

The Toulouse residents dreamed of this trip to Anfield, in the Europa League, and could have been stunned by the event when Diogo Jota opened the scoring in the ninth minute, after a full-line breakthrough which left the defense in place. But Téfécé was able to react, at least for a moment, and offer great joy on the Liverpool pitch, when Thijs Dallinga equalized after a quarter of an hour of play.

Well launched in depth by Niklas Schmidt and covered by Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Dutch striker scored his second goal of the season on the European scene, after that of the first day against Union Saint-Gilloise. Toulouse then held on for fifteen more minutes, facing the Reds without Salah, Van Dijk, Diaz or Szoboszlai at kick-off, all preserved by Jürgen Klopp.

Two goals to fold the match in five minutes

But it only took two actions for the Reds to take the lead and then make the break. Wataru Endo, with a header, scored his first goal with Liverpool since his arrival from Stuttgart this summer, then Darwin Nunez added to the score in the process, after a billiard shot in the Toulouse area.

At the start of the second period, Téfécé could have reduced the gap, but Gabriel Suazo, alone in front of the goal, procrastinated and shot at Alexander-Arnold. Against Liverpool, such failures are unforgiving. Twenty minutes later, Darwin Nunez, after a masterful action, also missed a goal, hitting the post.

But in what we would describe as the success of the great teams, the ball returned to Ryan Gravenberch, who was able to finish from the left at close range. At the very end of the match, at the end of added time, Mohamed Salah, who came on during the second period, added his name to the scoreboard with a goal from the right.

In the group’s other meeting, LASK won on the wire against Union Saint-Gilloise (2-1). Toulouse slips to third place in the group. Qualification for the next round remains possible. And in two weeks, Téfécé will be able to take their revenge against the Reds, at the Stadium, for another gala evening.
