Maike Kohl, Helmut Kohl’s widow, does not receive any compensation

The widow of the former Chancellor Helmut Kohl (CDU), Maike Kohl-Richter, does not receive any compensation for distributing alleged quotes from Kohl in a controversial book. The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in Karlsruhe rejected their corresponding claim on Monday. Kohl-Richter had asked for five million euros.

The legal dispute began after the book was published in 2014 while Kohl was still alive. Regional and higher regional courts dealt with it. Based on these decisions, it is legally established that the book author Heribert Schwan is not allowed to distribute the quotes in question. The BGH should clarify whether this also applies to the publisher and whether a claim for compensation is inheritable and whether Kohl’s widow is entitled.
