“I am far from wanting to put too much responsibility on the shoulders of our young players. That would also be inappropriate. We have a responsibility to develop the players and introduce them to the professionals,” said Farke (Quoted via picture-Newspaper). As of today, the 46-year-old has fielded the fifth-oldest team in the Bundesliga this season. Only VfL Bochum (29.02), Union Berlin (27.87), FC Schalke (27.57) and FC Augsburg (27.10) are above Gladbach’s average age of 27.01.
The main reason why Yvandro Borges (18 years old), Jan Olschowsky (20), Oscar Fraulo (18), Conor Noss (21) and Rocco Reitz (20) only played 22 minutes is obvious: In Farke’s eyes, the youngsters (still) lack the quality to help the Fohlen-Elf in the Bundesliga.
“I’m glad we have them with us. They’re developing well and continue to step on the gas,” Farke praised his talents. However, he qualified: “With all due respect, the Bundesliga is on a different level than the Regionalliga West or the U19 Bundesliga.”
Return to the “Borussia way”?
The regular places for Joe Scally (19) and Manu Koné (20) prove that the young professionals don’t have to despair. Both players are among Farke’s top performers and have played a major role in Borussia presenting themselves much more convincingly than they did last season.
It is therefore quite possible that, with appropriate development, other teenagers will soon find themselves in the Gladbach starting XI. That would also go well with the return to the “Borussia way” and the incorporation of their own talents into the professional team, which was propagated in the summer. Sports director Roland Virkus had regretted in several interviews that the club had deviated from this path.
