Nittenau: 35 injured in residential complex fire – Bavaria

After a fire in an apartment complex left more than 30 people injured, officials have begun investigating the cause of the fire. Special forces were now able to enter and investigate the building in Nittenau (Schwandorf district), as a police spokesman confirmed on Friday. There was initially no concrete information as to why the fire occurred.

The fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in a paper storage room in the basement of the apartment building. 35 of the approximately 60 residents suffered injuries from the smoke. According to information from Thursday evening, two seriously injured people and five moderately injured people were taken to hospitals. It initially remained unclear how many of the injured were still being treated on Friday.

Because the residential building, which consists of two halves, is likely to be uninhabitable until further notice, the residents were initially accommodated and cared for in a sports hall on Thursday. A spokeswoman for the city of Nittenau said on Friday that the majority of people were staying with family and friends. Only a family of eight had to sleep in shared accommodation. An alternative temporary solution will also be sought for another family of seven on Friday.
