Nintendo Switch 2: This is how Nintendo makes it easier for you to switch to the new generation of consoles

Of course, Nintendo America boss Doug Bowser (yes, that’s his real name) couldn’t be persuaded to make a concrete announcement about the new generation of consoles, but at least Nintendo seems to be thinking about how the transition could go as smoothly as possible.

And Nintendo created the right tool for this in 2016 with the Nintendo Account. This may sound a bit obvious at first, but until now players have had to get used to a new account system for each generation of Nintendo consoles and have therefore never been able to access their old games.

“One thing we introduced for the Switch was around communication and transition [zwischen den Konsolen-Generationen] To make things easier is the introduction of the Nintendo Account. In the past, each console also had a completely new account system. The Nintendo Account will allow us to continue communicating with our players if and when we make the transition to a new platform to help facilitate this transition.”

It remains to be seen whether this means that we will still be able to play our purchased Switch games on the Switch 2. Previously it was not possible to transfer digital games from 3DS or WiiU to the Switch. The Nintendo Account could now be the key to this.

Although (or precisely) because Doug Bowser “doesn’t want to say anything about the possible functions of a new platform yet”, the rumor mill continues to churn relentlessly in the meantime. We’ll probably only find out whether the successor comes without Joy-Cons, how much it costs and whether we’ll even be able to play titles like Far Cry 7 on the handheld (?) when Nintendo finally makes an official announcement.
