Nike’s image is brilliant, business is booming. The sporting goods manufacturer is adding one scandal to the next. It’s about tax tricks, doping, the destruction of resources and misogyny.

The sporting goods manufacturer Nike and the scandal trainer Alberto Salazar – this is more than just a business relationship. That goes into the personal. When a son of company founder Phil Knight’s son died in a diving accident in El Salvador in 2004, Salazar was one of the first to phone the Nike boss and give him consolation. In turn, when Salazar collapsed with a heart attack during a training session on the Nike premises in Beaverton and had to be resuscitated, Knight stormed past all the prohibition signs in the hospital by Salazar’s bed. Such experiences weld together. “It’s never just a business,” wrote Knight in his autobiography, Shoe Dog.
