US sportswear giant Nike said on Monday it had terminated its sponsorship deal with Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood after he was arrested on suspicion of rape. Greenwood was released and placed on probation last week after being questioned about the alleged rape and assault of a young woman. The investigation is continuing.
The 20-year-old soccer player was initially arrested and taken into custody on charges of rape and assault. He is now also targeted for alleged sexual assault and death threats. In a statement released last week, Nike said it was “deeply concerned about these troubling allegations” and added that it would “continue to monitor the situation closely”.
Nike has terminated its collaboration with Mason Greenwood and will no longer sponsor him.

The firm has decided: “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete,” she announced in a statement released Monday. Mason Greenwood has been suspended by Manchester United, deprived of matches and training until further notice. The club has removed all Greenwood-related merchandise from its website, and his name does not appear in the drop-down list of player names to flock shirts.
Greenwood, trained at Manchester United, made his professional debut for the Red Devils in 2019. In 129 appearances, he scored 35 goals. He has extended his contract until at least 2025. He has a selection with the selection for the Three Lions, in September 2020.
