Of all the sentences that scare Maybrit Illner that evening, the following is probably the most surprising: “NATO needs Deutsche Bahn.” What an unexplored cosmos of jokes is opening up here… But it would of course be completely inappropriate to make use of it at a panel discussion on the topic “Hot war in Ukraine – hybrid war in Europe?”. The sentence falls at the very end, someone in Illner’s blue studio could have made a face. This great quote was created by an American, “Retired Lieutenant General of the US Army” Frederick “Ben” Hodges, who may not be able to assess how NATO-compatible Deutsche Bahn is even without acts of sabotage from outside. In general, he doesn’t seem to be that familiar with the customs of German talk formats. Once he addresses the hostess by her first name: “It’s very important, Maybrit.” That’s how it’s often done on US television. But Mr. Gysi, Ms. Klein, Mr. Nouripour are sitting with Illner.
