Individuals set fire to eight vehicles including a heavy goods vehicle, and four other vehicles were burned by the spread of this fire in the Beaudottes district of Sevran, detailed a police source. Burning barricades were also set up in Rougemont, another district of this popular city north of Paris, added this source.
Bus stolen and then set on fire
“Fifty individuals with iron bars” also managed to steal an RATP bus, which they set on fire in the city of 3,000 in Aulnay-sous-Bois, continued the police source. Footage shot overnight by freelance journalist Clément Lanot shows the smoking carcass of the bus, under a burned-out surveillance camera. Five arrests took place, said the police source, stressing that no police officer had been injured.
The previous night had also been marked by trash fires and the throwing of projectiles at the police, deployed as reinforcements to secure the premises. The violence came after the death of a 30-year-old man on Saturday, a few hours after being shot by a police officer during an intervention between the neighboring towns of Aulnay-sous-Bois and Sevran.
Original vehicle theft
Asked for the theft of a van around 12:30 p.m., a crew from the Aulnay-sous-Bois anti-crime brigade found the vehicle and tried to check the driver, who was stopped at a red light.
“A policeman came up to the driver’s window and, in circumstances that have yet to be determined, fired his weapon – a single shot – as the van slammed into motion,” said Éric Mathais, the public prosecutor of Bobigny, in a press release on Sunday.
The policeman in shock
The motorist ended his race a few hundred meters further by hitting parked cars, in an alley in the Beaudottes district, according to the prosecution. The policeman, “in a state of shock, had to be hospitalized and the doctors have not yet authorized his hearing”, indicated Éric Mathais.
The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) was seized of the investigation.
