A man died in a police operation in Nienburg an der Weser over the Easter weekend. Now the public prosecutor’s office has made new details public.

After a fatal police operation in Lower Saxony Nienburg an der Weser almost two weeks ago further investigation results were published. The recordings from two body cameras have now been evaluated, as the Verden public prosecutor announced on Wednesday.

It shows the 46-year-old man, who was later shot, standing on the terrace of an apartment building on Holy Saturday and holding a knife in his hand. Although he was asked to put the knife down, he moved towards the police officers and stabbed the knife in the direction of a police officer and a police dog, the prosecutor said.

While the officer was able to fend off the stabs with a shield, the dog was injured. “As a result,” the fatal shots were fired. The public prosecutor did not explain how this happened. “However, based on the recordings, no final assessment of criminal conduct is possible,” she explained.

According to earlier reports, the man was hit by eight projectiles, one of which hit the 46-year-old’s heart. He died within a very short time.

According to the investigating authorities, the reason for the police operation in downtown Nienburg was an emergency call made by the 40-year-old friend. The 46-year-old threatened her with a knife.

During the operation, a 45-year-old policewoman was seriously injured “due to the use of police firearms.” The police service dog also suffered serious injuries.
