Nick Drake in portrait: Myth of melancholy – culture

Gifted songwriter, masterful guitarist, great mystery: Who was Nick Drake, who committed suicide at 26 and whose albums only sold millions of copies much later?

When Nick Drake’s third and final album is recorded, the record company can’t think of anything other than a cry for help. In November 1971, Island Records, then also the label of Bob Marley, Cat Stevens and Jethro Tull, published a bizarre press release: Unfortunately, they don’t know where Nick Drake is these days. It is almost impossible that he will appear in public again at some point. But he has made an album and it will be released. Just like all the other records he might record one day. “His first two albums didn’t sell shit. But if we keep releasing them, maybe someone will stop, really listen and agree with us (…). Then we’ve done our job.”
