Nia Künzer: Why women’s football is better than men’s football

Twenty years ago, Nia Künzer shot the German team to the world title. In the starinterview, she explains why she believes the current team is capable of great things at the tournament – and why the failed men’s World Cup is positive for the women.

Ms. Künzer, your recently published book is entitled “Why women play better football”. Directly asked: why?
The title is a bit provocative, I’ll admit that. That was meant with a wink.

On the cover, on which you and your co-author Bernd Schmelzer can be seen, nobody winks.
Anyone who reads the book knows what we mean by that.

So why is women’s football better? Where do you think women are ahead of men?
Women’s football is more approachable and less aloof. The atmosphere in the stadiums is less aggressive and the pitch is friendlier too. There are fewer game interruptions, fewer arguments and discussions.
