What is the NFL?
The National Football League is all about American football. The NFL is the American professional league. 32 teams, so-called franchises, are part of this league. The teams are divided into two halves: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Both conferences are in turn divided into four groups, the divisions. Four teams play in each division. Each team plays 17 games in the regular season. The final, the Super Bowl, takes place every year in early February and is one of the biggest sporting events in the world.
Why is the NFL suddenly playing in Germany?
The NFL operates a few “International Games” outside of the United States each year. Since 2007, several matches have been played in London each year. Since 2005 there has always been one game per season in Mexico City. Munich is now adding to this list.
The NFL wants to make their sport more popular outside of the USA. In Germany, this seems to have worked well in recent years. American football is becoming more and more popular, the number of spectators is increasing every year – the first game in Germany is therefore a logical consequence.
But it shouldn’t stay that way, the partnership is long-term. A regular season game will also be played in Germany in the next four years. Munich and Frankfurt alternate as venues.
Why Munich of all places?
FC Bayern has had a partnership with the NFL team Kansas City Chiefs for years, and the Munich team even visited the team in 2019. The NFL is also planning to expand cooperation with the German Football League (DFL). In addition, Munich not only offers a wide range of sports, but also one of the largest and most modern stadiums in Germany.
Which teams are playing in Munich?
The Seattle Seahawks meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 13th. The Seahawks, who won the Super Bowl in 2014, are one of the most popular teams in Germany. The Buccaneers, on the other hand, belong to four teams that have secured the marketing rights for the German market. Only these four are allowed to enter into advertising partnerships in Germany, for example. Personally, quarterback Tom Brady stands out in the Buccaneers. The 44-year-old is the only player to have won the Super Bowl seven times and is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Brady last won the Super Bowl with his Buccaneers in 2021.

It took less than an hour for all tickets to be sold out at the official ticket sale in July. According to NFL Germany boss Alexander Steinforth, three million tickets could have been sold.
