Brian Flores was fired from the Miami Dolphins in January after three years as coach. Now he’s suing the NFL and three of his former teams — for discrimination.

Recently fired football coach Brian Flores has sued the NFL and three of his former teams for damages over racism. US media reported on Tuesday, citing a statement from Flores’ lawyers and the lawsuit filed in a court in New York. The African American Flores directs his claims against the National Football League and against the New York Giants, the Denver Broncos and his last team so far, the Miami Dolphins. He was released from there in January after three years.

Flores accuses the league and teams that he himself and other black people have been discriminated against when filling coaching positions. “In a way, the NFL is segregated by race and managed like a plantation,” the lawsuit states. Flores said he is aware that the lawsuit may mean he will never coach in the NFL again. But he hopes other people will join him to make life easier for future generations.

NFL denies allegations

The NFL denied the allegations in a statement. Diversity is at the core of everything the league does.

Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin is currently the only black head coach in the NFL. Teams are required to interview at least two candidates who belong to a social minority for open head coaching positions. Flores reportedly had an appointment for the job with the New York Giants, but they chose Brian Daboll before the meeting.
