The number of new corona infections has been increasing for weeks. On Friday, the value of the newly reported cases exceeded the 20,000 mark again. Corona patients in hospitals are also increasing – the medical president warns.

Corona infections are rising sharply again – and even earlier than a year ago: the nationwide seven-day incidence has again increased significantly. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Saturday morning as 145.1. For comparison: the previous day the value was 139.2, a week ago it was 100.0.

The health authorities in Germany reported 21,543 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from the figures that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 04.15 a.m. A week ago the value was 15,145 infections.

Corona patients in hospitals: The most important key figure is also increasing

According to the new information, 90 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 86 deaths. The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI on Friday as 3.50 (Thursday: 3.31, Wednesday: 3, 07). The value is not published on Saturday and Sunday.

With the indicator it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay. A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

Increasingly louder, however, are the warnings of renewed emergencies in the clinics and a wait-and-see policy of eyes-to-and-through. The medical staff is at the limit and no one wants to experience again that predictable operations have to be canceled, said medical president Klaus Reinhardt. “This should also be kept in mind by those who, for whatever reason, have not yet vaccinated.” Reinhardt promoted booster vaccinations and decisive action: “The situation is still manageable.”
