“Next Chapter”: AI artist ages fictional characters like Forrest Gump

Sometimes a fictional character grows so fond of you that you long for a sequel, even if the story is long overdue. Alper Yesiltas also recognized this need and developed the AI project “Next Chapter”. It is based on the question of what some fictional movie characters would look like if their story were continued today.

With his works, Yesiltas gives his followers a foretaste of how a possible sequel could be implemented. He lets legends like Tom Hanks in the role of Forrest Gump or Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in “American Psycho” age with the help of artificial intelligence. Commenting on his first work – the aged version of ‘Kill Bill’ character Beatrix Kiddo, played by Uma Thurman – one user wrote, “My heart leapt…I thought I was looking at the first photo of ‘Kill Bill 3’.” You can see all the works in his series in the photo series above.

AI artist inspires with various projects

It is not the first time that Yesiltas has polarized with his work. Last year his works for “As If Nothing Happened” went around the world. They show deceased celebrities such as Lady Diana or Michael Jackson, whom Yesiltas brings back to life with his art and makes them appear as old as they would be today. You can see the results here. The “Young age(d)” project, on the other hand, is based on the question: “What would some young celebrities look like in a few decades?”, with the artist letting pop stars like Harry Styles or Justin Bieber age by decades. And with the “Thisness” project, the Turkish artist has catapulted legends and icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Benjamin Franklin into the present day.

Yesiltas uses various software programs for his adaptations, including the AI photo app “Remini”, the editing program “Lightroom” and the software “VSCO”. In conversation with the star he says: “The most important thing is that the image I edit looks realistic to me. The time I spend on a single image varies. But I would say it takes a while.” He has been involved with digital photography and art since 2003, but only started sharing his work on Instagram last summer. Here he is now followed by 145,000 people.
