Newcastle United and coach Steve Bruce will go their separate ways after the sporting downturn – will Lucien Favre now take over the office?
After the takeover by a Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, renovation work is now beginning at Newcastle United: Steve Bruce has given up his position as team manager by “mutual agreement”, announced the second-bottom of the Premier League on Wednesday.
It has not yet been decided who will be the 60-year-old’s successor. Among other things, the former Bundesliga coach Lucien Favre is traded at the traditional club with huge financial opportunities.
A Saudi consortium, which is largely influenced by the Saudi Arabian state fund under the control of the highly controversial Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, recently took over Newcastle for the equivalent of around 350 million euros. The Premier League waved the deal through despite vehement criticism from human rights organizations.
Graeme Jones takes over Newcastle for the time being
Jürgen Klopp from Liverpool FC expects Newcastle to soon become a title candidate in England with the entry of Saudi Arabia.
“In five, six, seven years, Newcastle will be a superpower, if the owners are patient,” he had said last: “The new owners have enough money to buy the whole league.” Klopp added ironically: “Maybe this will happen at some point, then everyone will have the same chances again.”
Newcastle is “a club with incredible support and I hope the new owners can get it where we all want it. I wish everyone the best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond,” said Bruce, his previous assistant Graeme Jones will prepare the Magpies for the game at Crystal Palace on Saturday. After eight games, Newcastle is still waiting for their first win of the season.
