New traffic hub for Munich is Poccistraße – Munich

Munich gets a new transport hub. Where the Südbahnhof used to be and the districts of Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt and Sendling meet, the Poccistraße regional train station will be built by the end of this decade at a cost of 60 million euros. Next year, the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Netz intends to submit the documents for the planning approval, i.e. the building permit. According to project manager Uwe Leidig, construction could then begin in two to three years – depending on how quickly the Federal Railway Authority, as the approval authority, examines the plans.

In recent years, the district around the district administration department (KVR) has changed quite a bit. The most striking structural changes include the new Volkstheater on Tumblingerstraße and the Luise cultural center on Ruppertstraße. So now a new train station is to follow, to which a new underground station is also to be docked. But whether the latter will be built – the subway stations Poccistrasse and Implerstrasse would then be merged – depends on whether the city decides to build the U9. Due to the immense costs of at least three and a half billion euros and the uncertainty as to whether the project will be financed by the federal government, this is far from certain.

For the new regional train station, the city is giving future passengers an additional access via Ruppertstrasse. The city council made the decision in July. The entrance will be between the Luise and the KVR, where there is already a fire brigade access. The planning costs for this are around 220,000 euros, and access is expected to cost a total of three million euros. On the other hand, the city has again rejected access via Tumblingerstraße, partly because of various imponderables during construction and risks in fire protection and traffic safety.

Travelers can reach the train station with the U3 and U6 as well as with buses

The main entrance to the new train station will be on Lindwurmstraße. From there, right next to the railway bridge, the site is accessed via a barrier-free trough structure that is almost 160 meters long and four meters wide. Through an underpass, the passengers then reach the 340 meter long platform, which is located at the level of the KVR, the registry office and the Luise. The trains to and from Mühldorf, Rosenheim and the Chiemgau should then stop there, for example.

In the future, travelers will reach the center with the U3 or the U6, and perhaps also with the U9 from the end of the 2030s. Today’s Metrobus line 62 also stops on Poccistrasse and Ruppertstrasse, and bus line 132 on Implerstrasse. According to an earlier estimate, 7,700 passengers are expected a day, but there will probably be more, not least because of the Volkstheater and the residential buildings planned on the cattle yard . One thing is certain for DB: the regional train stop will relieve the heavily frequented transfer stations at Marienplatz, Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof.

In theory, according to project manager Leidig, S-Bahn trains could also stop at Poccistrasse. However, since the platform is 76 centimeters high for regional trains, access to the S-Bahn would not be barrier-free, as the boarding height is 96 centimetres.
