The new Toyota Prius is more accommodating than ever. If you still prefer a compact crossover, you can opt for the new generation of the C-HR. Now also available as a plug-in hybrid.
In terms of volume, the first generation of the Toyota C-HR did not play a major role in Europe, but the design certainly caused a lot of excitement. Similar to the Nissan Juke before it, the first Toyota C-HR was also a real eye-catcher with its unusual proportions. Now the second generation is rolling in and it is a further development of the previous model, at least in terms of design, that is worth seeing. Visually, the short overhangs, front design and 20-inch model are not only based on the electric bZ4x, but in particular on the new Prius, with which it also shares large parts of its technology.
Turbo engines are still left out in the new generation Toyota C-HR, so the customer can choose between four-cylinder engines with 1.8 and 2.0 liters displacement. The combustion engines are combined with hybrid drives from the fifth Toyota generation, which, in addition to efficiency, are also increasingly focusing on driving performance. Major components of the hybrid system have been extensively redesigned to reduce size and weight. Among other things, a new transmission on the rear axle and a new control unit together with a more powerful high-voltage battery are used. The basic model is the 1.8-liter four-cylinder, whose hybrid unit delivers 103 kW / 140 hp, above which a hybrid module with 145 kW / 198 hp works in the two-liter version. As a plug-in hybrid, thanks to the 13.6 kWh battery, the driver has around 70 kilometers of electric range, one-pedal driving experience and a maximum of 164 kW / 223 hp. The standard consumption: probably less than a liter of super. Eagerly awaited by many customers: for the first time, an all-wheel drive version is also available for the two-liter hybrid.
Inside there is space for a maximum of five people and an extensive package of driver assistance systems. The driver sees a 12.3-inch instrument display and the navigation and sound system are operated via a second 12.3-inch display in the center of the dashboard. For the Toyota C-HR PHEV, the navigation system provides information on electric range and local charging stations. Various functions can be controlled using a smartphone app before setting off, for example to preheat or cool the interior. A new feature is an automatic parking function that enables remote-controlled parking via an app while the driver is outside the vehicle. Compared to its predecessor, the new crossover contains twice as much recycled plastic, which is used in more than a hundred different parts. These include a new fabric for the seat covers made from recycled PET bottles or the bumpers made from a newly developed resin material.
