New stations, extended lines … New metro features for 2022

New metro stations for the new year! From January 13, two new metro stations will be put into service on line 4, south of Paris, between Montrouge and Bagneux. The line will also be fully automated. RATP explains “with Île-de-France Mobilités, taking up a new technological and industrial challenge by launching full automation in 2023”.

It is also extending line 12 over two kilometers between the current terminus, Front Populaire, and Mairie d’Aubervilliers. To do this, two new metro stations, Aimé Césair and Mairie d’Aubervilliers, will be open by next spring.

Extension of line 14 to Saint-Denis-Pleyel

Line 14 is also in full extension. It had already been extended to Saint-Ouen City Hall in December 2020, in order to relieve congestion on line 13 and “improve the transport conditions of its 610,000 daily users”, according to the RATP.

As part of the Grand Paris Express project, it will be extended again to Saint-Denis-Pleyel, to the north, and to Orly airport, to the south. The commissioning of these sections should be effective mid 2024 to allow better service to the Olympic venues during the Olympic Games in Paris. The Olympic village, in particular, will be installed in the municipalities of Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen-Sur-Seine and L’Île-Saint-Denis.

Work is progressing on the Grand Paris Express project

The Grand Paris Express is starting to take shape! The excavation of line 15 south has just been completed, after three and a half years of work. The 37-kilometer section is “the longest metro line in France,” explains Sandrine Gourlet, director of external relations for the Société du Grand Paris. “We are taking another very important step for the project”, welcomes Jean-François Monteils, Chairman of the Management Board.

Quay facades intended to isolate the tunnel from the quay in the event of a fire, energy recovery system, graphics adapted to cognitive and visual disabilities: the Société du Grand Paris has no shortage of innovative ideas for the development of stations. Particular attention is paid to air renewal. “Long before the onset of the health crisis, we had decided on the measures that were put in place in Asia after the SARS crisis,” says Sandrine Gourlet.

The three other lines planned by the Grand Paris Express should be put into service by 2030. Ultimately, “200 kilometers of metro will have been built in twenty years, that’s as much as the entire existing metro”, she insists.
