MG4 Electric

© press-inform – the press office

MG is very serious about its electric models, especially in Europe. Because the Chinese carmaker is attacking a volume model like the VW ID 3 with the new MG4 Electric. The MG4 Electric is the first vehicle on the new MSP platform. The market launch of the compact class model is planned for the end of the year.

The Chinese SAIC offshoot MG drew particular attention to itself with its pleasing mid-range crossover of the Marvel R. At the turn of the year, the first customers should be sitting in the new entry-level model MG 4 Electric, and this has a key opponent in Europe in particular: the electric Golf of the future, the VW ID 3. With the MG4, the Chinese are introducing the new electric platform from the SAIC Group which not only compact class models will be on the road. With a length of 4.28 meters and a rear-wheel drive, the MG4 Electric plays in a league with a VW ID 3, a Cupra Born and should not only be a serious competitor of future models such as the Peugeot e-308 or an Opel Astra-e in Europe be.

The MG4 is optionally equipped with a flat-bottom battery that is only eleven centimeters high and has a capacity of 51 or 64 kWh, which should enable a range of up to 450 kilometers without recharging. Inside there is plenty of room for up to five passengers and a balanced weight distribution of 50:50 thanks to the flat battery pack in the underbody and the rear-wheel drive. Initially, the MG4 Electric will be available with battery capacities of 51 kWh and 64 kWh. In the medium term, however, the 125 kW / 170 hp and 150 kW / 204 hp rear-wheel drive will not remain the same and the MG4 will have additional performance levels and an optional all-wheel drive. The MG4 Electric accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds and has a governed top speed of 160 km/h.

The MG4 Electric is the first MG engine model for the European market to be based on the MSP platform for battery electric vehicles developed by the parent company SAIC. The modular architecture offers advantages in terms of flexibility, space utilization and especially weight savings. Their scalable structure is suitable for wheelbases from 2.65 to 3.10 meters, which allows for various body structures from a hatchback version to a sedan and a crossover. “With the ‘ONE PACK’ battery system developed by SAIC Motor, the projection surface of all batteries on the modular, scalable platform is the same,” says Zhu Jun, chief engineer at SAIC realize up to 150 kWh. It can meet the energy needs of models from A0 to D classes, offering users flexible and diverse choices. Customers can purchase a small battery first and then swap out or upgrade if longer range is required.”

On its MSP platform, the MG4 is equipped with a 400 volt on-board voltage at market launch; However, it can be upgraded to 800 volt technology for higher charging speeds for subsequent model generations. In addition, the powertrain can support future BaaS battery replacement systems (Battery as a Service).
