Now Mercedes is making its Maybach family electric too. It’s no longer a secret that models such as the Mercedes EQS SUV will soon be rolling out to customers in a particularly elegant Maybach version and are not only intended to conquer China. Before that, as a luxurious bridging music, there is the S-Class as a particularly noble Maybach version with hybrid drive and 100 kilometers of electric range.
In China in particular, the Maybach S-Class has been a real bestseller for years. The Chinese luxury customers between Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou like it particularly noble; the XXL wheelbase is set anyway, if you can afford it. Although the image-boosting twelve-cylinder as a rolling figurehead is particularly important to many customers, not only in Asia, for many it is all about the luxury aspect of comfortable travel in the rear. One reason why the Maybach S-Class has been particularly successful in China for many years with an entry-level six-cylinder engine that looks no different from its brothers with eight or twelve cylinders. Until now, however, there was no way to move the Maybach models purely electrically, at least as a plug-in hybrid model.
This is changing immediately, because with the Mercedes Maybach S 580e, the Swabians are offering the top model S-Class with a plug for the first time. “With our first plug-in hybrid model, we are combining the typical Maybach luxury experience with locally emission-free driving in electric mode,” says Maybach CEO Daniel Lescow. “The Mercedes-Maybach S 580e represents an important step in the transformation of our traditional brand into a electric future.” And the hybrid luxury sedan is just a first foretaste of the Maybach-EQS SUV. With a length of 5.47 meters, the Maybach is 18 centimeters longer than the long-wheelbase version of the Mercedes S-Class. As the wheelbase grows to 3,396 meters, the additional space will benefit the passengers. The rear seats with massage function are lavishly upholstered and can be converted into a reclining seat with a backrest angle of 37 degrees. So that the noble head is also comfortably bedded, the Mercedes luxury limousine offers a heated additional pillow on the headrests.
The equipment luxury with air-conditioned first-class reclining seats in the rear, electric blinds all around and a pleasant scent is already familiar from the other Maybach models; the drive from the normal S-Class. The basic engine for the Maybach S 580e is a six-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 270 kW / 367 hp, which is supported by a 110 kW / 150 hp / 440 Nm electric motor, which increases the total output to 375 kW / 510 hp and 750 Nm of maximum torque increases. It starts from a standstill in 5.1 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Purely electrically, the 580e is up to 140 km/h fast and can drive up to 100 kilometers without the combustion engine. An eleven-kilowatt charger on board can be used to recharge. A 60 kW charger for direct current fast charging is only available as an option, which fully charges the battery pack in around half an hour. The standard consumption: 0.8 liters or 22.9 kWh per 100 kilometers.
The market launch for the Mercedes Maybach S 580e is initially in the main market of China; Thailand and Europe will follow before being rolled out globally. Incidentally, the semi-electric luxury model can only be recognized visually at third glance – through the second fuel tank / charging flap on the left side of the body and a blue driving accent in the LED headlights.
