The commercial vehicle industry is switching to electric vehicles even faster than many private customers, especially when it comes to delivery vans. The best example is the new Mercedes Sprinter. Its new generation has a massive increase in range and is also being manufactured in the USA for the first time.

Mercedes Vans strikes a double blow. This summer there will be a thorough facelift for the Sprinter, making the star transporter more electric than ever. The big step will come in 2025, when the Sprinter will be placed on a new, fully electric platform. Until the all-new eSprinter rolls in, however, many customers should also like the interim model available from this summer, because there is a significant increase in electric range. The development engineers were already very satisfied with the test drives. The electric Sprinter easily managed a typical delivery route from Stuttgart to Munich Airport and back with one battery charge – at least 475 kilometers. TÜV Süd confirmed the driving data and a real consumption of 21.9 kWh per 100 kilometers. For comparison: the standard consumption of the previous eSprinter is just under 38 kWh, which means a maximum range of 160 kilometers.

The new generation is even more important for the USA than for customers in Europe, because the new electric Sprinter will be manufactured at the US plant in Charleston / South Carolina starting this year and will be available there from the summer. The German production sites in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde will be added in the autumn. “With the new eSprinter, we are taking the electric large van segment to a new level,” says Mathias Geisen, Head of Mercedes Vans. Benz eVan of all time.”

The new Mercedes Sprinter consists of a uniform front end that contains all high-voltage components and can therefore be combined with all vehicle variants – regardless of wheelbase and battery size. The high-voltage battery with a capacity of 56 to 113 kWh is located in the underbody between the axles, while the electrically driven rear axle is installed in the rear module. The permanent magnet synchronous motor, which weighs 130 kilograms, is available in two power levels with 100 kW / 136 hp and 150 kW / 204 hp, which deliver a maximum of 400 Newton meters of torque. In contrast to the combustion engine variants, all-wheel drive is not offered. The loading volume of the new Mercedes Sprinter is 14 cubic meters, the permissible total weight is up to 4.25 tons. The maximum electric range is around 400 kilometers; in the city cycle up to 500 kilometers should be possible. The new Sprinter fails when it comes to charging, because even at a quick-charging station, the van can only be recharged up to a maximum of 115 kilowatts.

Mercedes has invested 350 million euros in the next generation of its electric Sprinter. The vehicles are being built along the same lines as the still predominant number of combustion engines. “Depending on market demand, we can react flexibly to market requirements and vary production,” explains Mathias Geisen. “The vehicles are developed in close cooperation with our customers according to their needs.” Mercedes Van, which will be purely electric on the new EA architecture. By mid-decade, all mid-size and full-size vans based on the new modular architecture will be purely electric. The remaining combustion models will remain on the previous platform.
