The new Mercedes E-Class isn’t even on the market yet, so the Swabians are already following suit with the station wagon version, which continues to be called the T-model. Thanks to the EQE model family, there is no electric version, but there are economical petrol and diesel engines – with and without a plug.

There are still markets that can get enthusiastic about station wagons. The station wagon offers more loading volume and variability than a sedan if it is not intended to be a crossover. Like the E-Class sedan, the 4.95-meter-long station wagon is visually more pleasing than ever. With slightly larger dimensions and especially the increase in width and wheelbase, the LED light units, which illuminate the Mercedes star, are striking. The flexible loading volume is particularly important in a station wagon. Depending on the position of the rear backrests, there is a capacity of 615 to 1,830 liters behind the electric tailgate. With the plug-in hybrids, buyers of the Mercedes E-Class T-model have to be content with 460 to 1,675 liters.

In the interior, especially in the second row, there is more leg, head and elbow room for the occupants. The driver and front passenger look at up to four displays. In addition to the central and driver’s display, head-up and front passenger displays are available on request. As with the E-Class sedan, the vehicle key can also stay at home with the estate version, because your own smartphone or smartwatch is enough to open, lock and start the vehicle. The standard air suspension on the rear axle can optionally be expanded with a corresponding front axle. The same applies to the range of driver assistance systems, which can be expanded.

When it comes to the drive, the T-model of the Mercedes E-Class offers no surprises and is largely identical to that of the sedan. The basic engine is a two-liter four-cylinder turbo, which is available in two power levels as the E 300e and E 400e. The 230 kW / 312 hp E 300e is available with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, while the Mercedes E 400e 4matic with its 280 kW / 381 hp is a mandatory all-wheel drive – but also only offers four cylinders. The electric motor contributes 95 kW / 129 hp / 440 Nm for the drive in both sedans. This means that the business station wagon can reach speeds of up to 250 km/h and, with its 25.4 kWh battery, can cover more than 100 kilometers purely on electricity. More plug-in hybrids with diesel engines will follow, as well as the high-performance version from AMG, which offers at least six cylinders. Eight cylinders were deleted for the E-Class.

Nevertheless, many customers in many non-electrical markets are likely to opt for drives without a plug-in module. The 150 kW / 204 hp Mercedes E 200 and the E 220d with 145 kW / 197 hp / 440 Nm are available to start with, both of which have a 48-volt on-board power supply and starter generator with an output of 17 kilowatts. The nine-speed automatic is still standard here, while the customer can also order an all-wheel drive variant for the E 220d. The E 400d, which is known from the S-Class and offers six cylinders and a displacement of three liters, is likely to be the top model later.
