Hyundai is relaunching its compact crossover Kona in the fall. While other brands are switching completely to electric drives, the Koraner give their customers the choice of which drive they want to use in the future.

The design of the Hyundai Kona has been completely recreated, but the drives remain in the wide range of petrol, hybrid and electric drives. It can be assumed that the Korean carmaker will also add a particularly sporty N variant with up to 300 hp, as with the current generation in 2025. However, the all-electric Kona should be the focus of the engine portfolio, especially for the European market. “With the Kona, we offer a model for everyone and every lifestyle. The advanced drives and technologies as well as the design enrich the everyday lives of our customers,” says Heui Won Yang, head of development at Hyundai. “Hyundai is very keen to offer customers an optimized mobility experience that does justice to their different lifestyles.”

Striking are the new front and rear sections with striking LED light strips, which continue the design language of the past two years. The 4.35 meter long Kona Electric has a visible pixel structure in its horizontal LED light strip, similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is also electric, to differentiate it from the other variants. The rustic wheel arch linings should make the crossover appear a little more off-road than the current model. The Kona Hybrid also has two air flaps at the front, the petrol variant only has the higher air flap. These active external air flaps improve aerodynamic performance on both models and reinforce the similarity with the battery-electric variant. Depending on the model, the Kona rolls on 17, 18 or 19 inch alloy wheels.

Due to the six centimeter long wheelbase (2.66 meters), there is significantly more space inside. The occupants are happy about almost eight centimeters more legroom, numerous USB ports and more headroom in the rear. The driver and passengers look at two 12.3-inch screens in the cockpit, which display instruments and operating functions. For the first time with the Kona, updates can also be uploaded to the vehicle via data transmission (over the air). The load space can be increased to a volume of up to 723 liters by folding the rear seats. Also long established in this class: the electric tailgate and numerous driver assistance systems. Also new: NFC technology turns your smartphone into a digital car key.

Hyundai is currently keeping the technical details of the new electric drive to itself, so only the data for the combustion models are known. In addition to a two-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with 109 kW / 149 hp / 179 Nm, which is coupled to a continuously variable CVT transmission, the Kona is also available with a 1.6-liter turbo direct injection engine, the 145 kW / 198 hp / 265 Nm performs. The Hyundai Kona Hybrid available in South Korea is powered by a 1.6 GDI engine in combination with an electric motor that provides a system output of 104 kW / 141 PS / 265 Nm.
